The Jororo and Calusa Indian tribes were among the first to settle in the area now called Kissimmee, Florida, which means “Heaven's Place.”
Originally known as the community of Allendale, the City of Kissimmee was once a small trading post on the northern bank of the Lake Tohopekaliga . After the Civil War, a saw mill company purchased the area. Kissimmee homes began popping up, and citizens incorporated the city in 1883. Through the turn of the century, cattle ranching and sugar cane remained the main industries.
In the 1940s, more cattle ranching was developed in the area east of the Kissimmee River—now known as the Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park. Nestled among Kissimmee vacation homes and attractions, cattle still graze there.
In the 1920s, the population began to increase. The 1940s saw the construction of the Kissimmee Airport and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers preparation for World War II. Those influences began additional population growth.
In the 1950s, town leaders wanting to stimulate growth began attracting retirees. Then, with the opening of Walt Disney World resort and other tourist attractions in the 1970s, the city's population doubled.
